NSFW: Hetero-Hegemony and the GayVN Awards!

This week on Showtime, after nearly nine months, the 12th Annual 2010 GayVN awards finally saw the light of day, having been video taped for the first time in its history.  This, in spite of the fact, that their hetero. coevals - the AVN Awards - have long-since been an established fixture of the cable network's schedule in a much earlier prime time slot; while the GayVN awards were scheduled at about 2:30 AM.  Should we feel grateful, however, that the hetero-hegemony finally decided to grace my Gay brothers with an award show at all?  It was rather speciously delayed for quite a long time!  As I sat in front of my TV to watch the awards, I was immediately struck by how utterly stark and sparse the ceremony was, it was situated in a small theater (the infamous Castro Theater) with minimal lighting and visual effects save for the hawt DJ (and pron star), Dominic Pacifico.  (Mental note: contact Dominic for his play list!)  Compare this to the utterly lavish spectacle that the hetero. AVN Awards were able to put on for their adult entertainers!  This insult is only compounded by the injustice reported in late May by Gay adult entertainer, Steve Cruz - who won the Best Supporting Actor award that night in late October - that the recipients of the GayVN Awards had to return their trophies that night!

Would, I wonder, the hetero. AVN awards expect such indignities heaved upon their own adult entertainment community?  I hardly expect so, even if I were the paranoid sort!  I have, since, e-mailed Renee Johnson (Press) with the AVN concerning the disparity that I have observed.  I will inform you of her response...  Honestly, I was more than a little stunned; considering how expensive porn is, and considering the high quality events sponsored by and available at several Gay dance clubs throughout the U.S. - if not the world - the only limitation restricting this GayVN event seems to have been purely budgetary.  However, until Renee Johnson contacts me, this shall remain speculative.

Here is the run-down of the Winners that evening, short-lived as they were...

  • Best Newcomer: Conner Habib (Damn, that boy has nice calves!  Totally jealous!  And, apparently, there are only two previous Best Newcomer award winners who are still in the Gay adult entertainment Industry.)
  • Best Solo: Adam Killian (He wore an amazing be-dazzled gauntlet with his leather gear.  It was quite beautiful!  Hmmmm....it totally gives me some inspiration for another creative endeavor of my own.  Adam is also a graduate of Harvard University and a former Playgirl model.)
  • Best Group Sex Scene: Black Balled 7: Jail Slammed, accepted by Cameron Adams
  • Best Supporting Actor:* Steve Cruz
  • Best Cum Shot:* Rafael Alencar (Wall Street, Lucas Entertainment; filmed on an actual subway train in the middle of the night!)
  • Best Sex Comedy: Whorrey Potter and the Sorcerer's Balls (Apparently, this feature took five days to film, and seven months to finish in post-production because it was all filmed in front of a green screen!  It's also the first 3-D Gay adult feature film!)
  • Best Actor:* Logan McCree for The Visitor (Raging Stallion).
  • Performer of the Year: Wilfried Knight (Just like Susan Lucci, he got a standing ovation having finally won after seven consecutive nominations!)
  • Best Feature Release:* Focus/ Refocus (Raging Stallion)
As much fun as I had watching the Gay adult entertainment revel in their own creativity, I couldn't help but be struck by another form of disparity within the Gay community centered upon how we see ourselves and define others.  All of the categories above denoted by an asterisk (*) signifies a category that came to nominate a specific feature with two entertainers from the film that I could assuredly characterize as "Muscle Daddies" or DILFs (such as Allen Silver): Dad Takes A Fishing Trip (Joe Gage).  From all accounts it was a remarkable film, though it failed to secure an award; awards that seem to have been reserved for far younger and far more "sculpted" entertainers.  This gave me pause for concern, especially when I observed that the GayVN awards were open to public ("fan") voting this year!  It seems to me that hawt Daddies and their admirers - of which there are many (hint, hint!) - seems to have been passed over in silence without even a courteous nod of respect, even among ever-younger generations of my Gay brothers who seem to have lost any sense of respect for our Elders.
